Tourism and Hospitality Innovation and Management for Sustainability (THIMS)

Summary

The Tourism and Hospitality sector plays a crucial role for tourism and the global economy, providing not only accommodation services, but also food, transport, entertainment and many other support services for travellers all over the world. However, this sector is also associated with constant challenges in the operationalisation and profitability of services and with significant environmental and social impacts. Another challenge, no less relevant, is the strong competitiveness that exists in this sector. This means that factors related to the innovation of tourism and hotel products and services, together with appropriate management models, are fundamental to the sustainable development of the sector.

The aim of this project is to explore and extend the scientific research being carried out in the field of innovation and management for sustainability in two ways: to identify the main challenges and opportunities for the tourism sector in general and for the hotel sector in particular.
