Tourism, Water and Environmental Sustainability - WETourS
Summary
Water is a critical natural resource, yet only a small proportion of Earth’s water is freshwater available to support ecosystems, societies, and economies. Increasingly unsustainable consumption patterns have intensified global concerns about water scarcity and water quality, with challenges varying across regions. Agriculture accounts for the largest share of freshwater use, followed by industry and households, where tourism consumption is typically included. Although tourism depends strongly on reliable water availability, research on its relationship with water resources remains limited due to its complex and multifaceted nature. Water in tourism can be both a consumed resource and an environmental asset, making it important to understand how tourism affects water quantity and quality. Recognizing these challenges, organizations have promoted sustainable water management initiatives. Overall, analysing water use, environmental impacts, and governance is essential for supporting sustainable tourism development and improving resilience in regions dependent on both tourism and water resources.
