Universidade Portucalense Infante D. Henrique (UPT)

Project Description:

The project will enhance REMIT’s capacity to undertake internationally competitive applied research through the integration of advanced digital technologies for environmental monitoring, geospatial analysis and scientific communication. The proposed infrastructure will strengthen the Unit’s ability to generate high-quality spatial and environmental data, support innovative research methodologies, and improve the dissemination of scientific knowledge. The investment is aligned with REMIT’s Strategic Plan 2025–2029, expanding the Unit’s capacity to address key societal challenges related to climate change, cultural heritage and sustainable tourism while reinforcing scientific excellence, internationalisation and societal engagement.

Objectives

The overall objectives of this investment are to:

  1. Strengthen REMIT’s scientific and technological capacity by providing advanced infrastructure for environmental monitoring, geospatial analysis and digital research methodologies.
  2. Enhance the Unit’s ability to undertake interdisciplinary applied research addressing climate change, sustainable tourism, cultural heritage, territorial planning and digital innovation through the integration of advanced field data acquisition and spatial analysis technologies.
  3. Support the development of high-quality scientific research by enhancing the capacity for accurate environmental monitoring, geospatial data acquisition and spatial analysis.
  4. Reinforce knowledge transfer and societal engagement by providing innovative digital tools for the dissemination and visualisation of research outputs, promoting interaction with public authorities, industry, local communities and other stakeholders.
  5. Strengthen REMIT’s international competitiveness by supporting participation in collaborative national and European research projects and expanding opportunities for international scientific cooperation.

Expected Outcomes

The investment is expected to improve the quality, precision and efficiency of environmental monitoring, geospatial data acquisition and spatial modelling, enabling the adoption of more advanced research methodologies and supporting the production of high-quality scientific outputs. The enhanced infrastructure will strengthen REMIT’s competitiveness in national and European funding programmes, expand international scientific collaboration, and increase the visibility and impact of the Unit’s research.

The project will also reinforce REMIT’s contribution to evidence-informed policymaking and sustainable territorial development by facilitating the collection, analysis and communication of scientific evidence related to climate change, cultural heritage and sustainable tourism. Through innovative digital dissemination tools, the investment will improve stakeholder engagement, strengthen collaboration with public authorities, industry and local communities, and promote wider public access to research results, directly supporting REMIT’s strategic priorities for knowledge dissemination, internationalisation and societal involvement.

Project implemented under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) – a nationally implemented program, with an execution period until 2026, which aims to implement a set of reforms and investments designed to restore sustained economic growth after the pandemic, reinforcing the objective of convergence with Europe over the next decade.
