Tourism, Sustainability, and Regional Development

Tourism, Sustainability, and Regional Development

Summary

This project examines the role of tourism as a driver of regional development, focusing on its economic, social, and environmental impacts in tourism-dependent territories. The study analyses how tourism contributes to employment generation, infrastructure development, and the diversification of regional economies, particularly in emerging and transitional destinations. At the same time, it explores the challenges associated with tourism growth, including pressures on natural resources, environmental sustainability, and the management of visitor flows. Special attention is given to the role of cultural and natural heritage, including gastronomy and landscape identity, as key assets for strengthening regional competitiveness and destination attractiveness. Using an integrated methodological approach that combines qualitative and quantitative data, the research incorporates stakeholder interviews, spatial analysis, and documentary sources to better understand tourism dynamics at the regional level. Ultimately, the project aims to provide evidence-based insights for policymakers and destination managers on how sustainable tourism strategies can foster balanced regional development while safeguarding environmental resources and cultural heritage.
